Wyegate LDT

Post by Rich Beale »

Last Sunday saw the third LDT in as many weeks - The big one.. The Wyegate!

Me, Manty, Trev and John signed on at 9am and hit the route, mainly a loop around Monmouth - so a fair bit of the terrain we cover when we ride The Valley.. but with private land included for some of the 33 sections; and they were tough...

This year the Wyegate is part of the ACU Trail Bike Championship, so all the big guns were there.. but not exactly riding normal trail bikes!

Although there were 6 sections that were split championship/ normal route, the other 27 were shared. Navigation needed attention with almost 150 instructions on the road book..
Rock, streams, roots, hills and mud, all present .. and all challenging.

The last section was a massive graded hill climb - the further you get the less points you lose; like a red rag to a Bull, The Sergeant Major hit it flat out and looped his bike at the top - but respect, he got the clean! but his bike got a headache!!

By the end of the day we were the walking wounded.. and there were a few bent discs and levers.. but at the end of the day we all finished!

Not for the faint hearted but satisfying to complete!

The Swindonian LDT is next but will be like a fun day after this..

What don't kill you just makes you stronger.
